Colocation Datacenters in San Diego

According to datacentermap.com, there are currently 16 colocation datacenters located in San Diego. Major companies include the following:

– 12B Networks
– Edge Connex
– ScaleMatrix
– SimpleNet, Inc.
– CARI.NET
– American Internet Services
– TW Telecom

One of the biggest colocation providers located in San Diego is EdgeConnex. Their 27,000-square-foot carrier-neutral facility has been purpose built and precisely located in downtown San Diego so as to provide a secure colocation environment to its tenants.  Building POEs are diverse, with a variety of fiber conduits to diverse MMRs. The facility is connected to multiple telecommunication carriers, as well as other colocation providers, such as: Cox Communications, Level 3, Telepacific, XO and Zayo.

Apart from their San Diego-based colocation facility, they operate additional datacenters in South America, as well as overseas, in Europe. They plan on building facilities in various Asian countries, too.

Another important colocation provider established locally is American Internet Services, which operate a 25,000-square-foot carrier-neutral facility, located in the Sorrento Valley area of San Diego. This datacenter is a SAS 70 Type II-compliant facility that features N+1 or better redundancy on all datacenter systems.

The colocation datacenter market of San Diego has experienced a sudden boom in popularity, due to many multi-million dollar tech and banking companies being established in the region, which are in urgent need of colocation services. However, in comparison with other U.S. cities, San Diego’s colocation services remain some of the most expensive in the entire country. This is the result of many issues centered around the stringent federal-level environmental regulations, as well as the frequent droughts which can lead to spontaneous brownouts. Although California has steadily increased its reliance on alternative energy, most datacenters still derive their power from hydroelectricity due to its obvious reliability.  According to Zillow, the ever-increasing property values are another contributing factor (in 2015 alone, property values spiked 5%).
